![]() Everyone wants to carry a ton of junk around and no one wants to be slow so even wizards need STR. STR helps you do more melee damage, attack more times per turn, and carry more stuff without penalizing your speed. Turn that on so don't feel obligated to thoroughly explore every floor. There's an option you can toggle before creating your character where if the game generates an item, but you miss it without ever picking it up or identifying it, then the game pretends it was never generated and can generate it later. Generally the best items in the game are artifacts, unique items that will appear only once on a given playthrough. Telepathy doesn't work against mindless creatures but it is still extremely useful. Some equipment gives you telepathy which is kind of like constant detection. Detect monsters will allow you to explore deeper floors, even floors with monsters capable of instakilling your character can be explored as long as you keep track of where they are and never enter their LOS. If you don't have the spell it's a good idea to get items that can cast it for you. Ideally you should get an equipment set with immunity to all ailments, though some are much higher priority than others.ĭetection spells are really useful. You can't cast a heal spell when confused so casters especially need potions. Getting hit with paralyze when you don't resist it is usually a death sentence. Always keep potions of cure critical wounds or better in your inventory not only for their healing but also because they can cure status ailments. Status ailments are a serious threat in Angband. Then examine every new monster you encounter to see what it can do before you try fighting it. Turn on the option that gives you a complete monster memory from the start. Farming weak enemies is almost always a waste of your time. If you manage to kill something way above you you can potentially gain 10+ levels from that one kill. The amount of experience you get from a kill is scaled dramatically by your level. A warrior can and should replicate many of the magic class's utility abilities with potions, scrolls, staves, etc. Healing items are necessary, teleport and word of recall items are necessary if you can't cast them (and still aren't bad to have around if you can). Speaking of, consumable items are crucial to success. Teleportation is really powerful and every character has easy access to it through scroll, but it could conceivably land you in a worse situation than you left, so it shouldn't be used recklessly. If your HP is low enough that you could conceivably die to the next hit, don't cast your heal spell with a 95% success rate, drink a healing potion instead. Rule number one is to never take a turn where you could conceivably die before you get to act again unless there is absolutely no way to avoid it. So what's the differences between this and regular Angband/Zangband? I figure this is the best chance I'll have to ask about this, I know very little about z/angband but I was playing through Labyrinth of Touhou recently and the devs seemed to be absolutely in love with a variant called "Hengband" with lots of references scattered throughout the game and the superboss WINNER apparently being a reference as well. Pick your fights and use whatever consumables it takes to win (or escape).Īlso, if you want to play something specifically for the Tolkien feel, you might appreciate Sil(-Q) or FAAngband, as they hew more closely to canon than vanilla. You don't have to fight everything, you don't have to explore everywhere, and nothing (apart from artifacts) is irreplaceable. ![]()
